Director Sam Raimi is headed back into the horror genre with his next movie Send Help, and Deadline reports that Dylan O’Brien (Love and Monsters) has joined the cast.
O’Brien is fresh off playing Dan Aykroyd in Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night, an immersive look at the 90 minutes preceding the first ever episode of “Saturday Night Live,” and he also starred in last year’s M. Night Shyamalan-produced thriller Caddo Lake for streamer Max.
Rachel McAdams (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) will also star.
Deadline details the upcoming 20th Century Studios project, “The film is a survival horror thriller about two colleagues (O’Brien and McAdams) who become stranded on a deserted island, the only survivors of a plane crash. On the island, they must overcome past grievances and work together to survive, but ultimately, it’s a battle of wills and wits to make it out alive.”

We've just got back from watching Send Help at Norwich's VUE cinema and we had great fun with it!. It's nice to see Raimi still loves making rock em shock em thrill the audience films. People including us were gasping and jumping at the right places and laughing in the right places.

I was a little worried it might have become a preachy story. Nasty man gets his comeuppance for bullying an inevitably stronger woman. There's is some of that, yes, but the way it all plays out was way more fun and interesting.

Bits I enjoyed the most:

The running joke played straight faced that our lady isn't just good at building a camp and a fire and hunting etc ... by half way through the film, she's making fashionable clothing and preparing sushi delicacies. I was laughing each time I'd seen what else she'd made.

Raimi taking his usual impish delight on showing something disgusting on screen then showing it two times more to desensitise the viewer. Then 'needlessly' showing it a fourth time just because it's Sam Raimi and he gets a kick out of doing that. We didn't really need to see our questionable heroine accidently puke oh her boss's face ... then we see it happen immediately again three more times :p

The rubbish blatantly CGI wild boar brought us out of the movie but that just another example of Raimi wanting to push things too far. I reckon he knew if looked fake but was more interested in the gag fun factor of it spraying our heroine with snot and blood for again waaay longer than was necessary.

A few of the small blink and you'll miss them sound F/X were lifted from The Evil Dead and have also been used by Raimi in his other earlier films.

Our two heroes getting the giggles after each time they've battered the shit out of each other was Raimi giving the audience a breather. and us a wave from behind his camera.

I'd described it as Misery on a beach with the same energy as Evil Dead 2.

Sam Raimi’s Send Help is showing an unusually strong box office performance, holding steady with almost no drop during its third weekend in theaters.
The film added another 8.9 million dollars this weekend with just a one percent decline, reaching 10.7 million across the four day stretch and a 49 million dollar total. The rare hold suggests strong word of mouth and repeat viewings, reinforcing Send Help as one of Raimi’s most commercially resilient releases in years.

Fantastic news. More this and less CGI superhero slop, please!

SEND HELP is coming to digital streaming on March 24th and physical media on April 21st. The physical release includes more than two hours of extensive bonus features, including early versions of key scenes, behind-the-scenes looks at the production and sound design, and a blooper reel.

SEND HELP is getting an official escape room experience at WonderCon Anaheim this weekend!
Inspired by the horror-comedy thriller directed by Sam Raimi and starring Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien, the activation drops attendees straight into the film’s tense island setting. The story follows a corporate employee and her boss who become the sole survivors of a plane crash, forcing them into a survival scenario where power dynamics quickly shift and a battle of wits unfolds. Arriving on digital platforms this weekend, the film blends survival, dark humor, and psychological tension, as McAdams’ character turns the tables on her overbearing boss in a story that’s as much about control as it is survival. The WonderCon experience pulls directly from that premise, challenging attendees to navigate puzzles, trust their instincts, and make it out before time runs out… because in this version of the story, there’s no one coming to save you.

Someone on Reddit shared snippets of the second draft of SEND HELP, with one major twist that was ultimately (thankfully) cut from the final film:
FLASHBACK

LINDA IN HER KITCHEN

Linda is at the window with her bird. She lets it fly free out the window.

LINDA: Before I got here, I was at the end of my rope. Lost. Hopeless. I prayed for help but none came.

She turns to her open laptop, where we once saw her cooking from a recipe. Only now we see something different ON SCREEN:

'How to make a homemade bomb...'

She’s not cooking, she’s making an EXPLOSIVE DEVICE.

LINDA (CONT’D): I didn’t see a way out.

Letting her bird go has new meaning for us. She was never planning on coming home.

LINDA ABOUT TO GET ON THE PLANE

Linda is nervous, handing her bag off to the baggage handler. This time, we PUSH IN on her bag, and we realize she brought a bomb on board.

LINDA: Women like me... no one really sees us. Suspects us. We’re invisible.

Linda is the one who caused the explosion.

LINDA ON THE PLANE

Everything shakes. She’s ready to die, the dangling oxygen mask in front of her unused...

LINDA: I was ready to die.

She was trying to commit suicide.
There is also a moment in the climax where it's revealed that...
Linda killed the mansion caretakers we see on the boat, and that she sabotaged Bradley's raft that falls apart when he poisons her.
I'm personally glad all of this got cut. It would have made (THAT CHARACTER) much more unlikeable, when one of the major points of the movie is to make you really unsure of who to root for.

Y'all this is such a fun movie, I had such a great time watching it. Was disappointed Bruce got chopped out even if it was just a picture - the portrait behind him is a hilarious touch, too.

Definitely glad that got caught - the last scene with her and the bird just cruising down the highway is wonderful and if the story becomes all about her sudden suicide mission it ruins her survive-at-any-cost ethos.

Fantastic news. More this and less CGI superhero slop, please!

It's been a great year for original horror, IMO.
