Ash vs Evil Dead S01E09: Bound in the Flesh Discussion [SPOILERS]

I still wonder how the evil force that creates the deadites knows what's going on like those sayings between Amanda in the bathroom "Is that lavender I smell?" when the deadites were nowhere around. Same for Amanda's cleavage jokes when they were walking to the militia compound again no deadites yet Evil Ash made both of those references.

I was about to say that Evil Ash grew from the hand so had access to his memories...

... but the hand was obviously separate at that point, so I don't quite buy that. You'd think the memories would be shared from the point when they parted company, right? Or a mixture of Ash's memories up unto the events of ED2 and knowledge the Evil/spirits/whatever were able to accumulate.

I think it's fair to say that Ash was always appreciative of nice cleavage, and so Evil Ash would be aware of that (probably because part of him is as well) so he made that twisted pun. It could just be a coincidence that our Ash happened to make a remark to Amanda earlier.

I don't really buy that though, as Evil Ash seemed to act like he knew Amanda and had access to Ash's memories to date. This could just be a clever ruse, of course, or just the fact he comes from Ash's flesh means there is a link between them even after they were seperated.

Mardeadite, I felt the same way. That hand would not have the memories of the current Ash. Only up to the point of his hand being chopped off. I know that the evil force has a central consciousness that it channel through multiple deadites but knowing everything said when not around is ridiculous.

The clip Joem1k posted is now on YouTube.

I still don't buy that Ash would send Kelly and Pablo away. Does he really believe they can get to civilization? Did he forget that once you're in the cabin, the Evil won't let you leave?

I think, he see's it as the better of two evils. No pun intended. I.e. they'll be in danger anyway if they stay at the cabin. He probably feels they at least have a chance of escape. While the Evil Force has a lot of power, it isn't omnipotent.

I will say, I don't particularly agree with him. It did not turn out well for those who wandered in the woods, in the film. They would be better sticking it out and banding together, I reckon. But I can understand his reasoning as I think he has built the cabin up in his mind as this big epicentre of Evil, which is not unwarranted.

I'm not sure why it would be any worse than any other place that the incantations were recited. Maybe because it was the first time in centuries, this happened? They say the book opened a portal to hell.* Even when the Evil became dormant after Knowby and the events of the films, maybe when Ash did it again in the trailer, the actual Evil force/spirits/whatever actually travelled from the cabin area. A thin place between worlds, if you like, since a doorway had already been opened there.

It took a day or two for the effects of Ash and tatoo girl's drugged up recital to take place, didn't it? At least in full power. The Evil had a bit of a trek this time...

Yeah, I'm not sure the writers put that much thought into it.

I get DyD's point - judging from the clips we're taking a left swing back toward straight horror-comedy again, and it kind of weakens Evil Ash after the job they did building him up to be a credible threat in the last episode.

Also it looks like he gets dispatched very quickly, judging from how much time the hikers and Ruby seem to have in the preview.

I will say that I actually laughed at the clips.  The amount of lampshading in them is legitimately hilarious, and the random facts that Ash has absorbed RE the team actually shows he cares.

I F**KING CALLED IT, AND DAMN YOU CLIFFHANGERS !!!!!!!!!!! *shakes fist*

Ok now that i am over that, the one thing to point out from this episode is some of the dialogue written in this episode, it's very...i don't know how to put it but it's very "REALLY ASH ?!" kind of moments and probably wont sit well with some people. I laughed at most of the stuff in this episode  and was disturbed in some part's (The two of us scene and what happen's to the hikers), but good god is ash a creep in this one, i'm really starting to wonder if he isn't starting to lose is it mentally, cause some of the shit he says in this one just comes off as the ramblings of a mad man.

But despite some of the dialogue written in this one it was a very brutal and disturbing episode to take us straight into the finale, it answer's some questions and leave's us with even more question's in general.

I will be back to do a in-depth review later on this week.

And, army of darkness is hinted at in this episode!

EDIT

Just saw the next preview for the season finale and holy shit, it looks fucking insane

Kelly looks like she's going to be freaking abused in this next episode along with pablo and ash looks like his about to go into full on badass mode. GOD i don't know if i can wait another week AGGHHHH  :s

Another great cabin episode, though I still prefer the last one (mainly because some of the dialog in this one).

Did you also catch the Three Stooges reference?

Would that make ash curly then ?  :D

Wow, that episode was nuts.

So Ruby actually wrote the book or is she possessed by the Dark One who possessed her/or made some kind of deal with her when she went looking for her family at the cabin?

OK, watched it for the second time and besides some nitpicks like some of the dialogue and a few weird shots (AKA flying Ruby), I only have two major complaints for this episode.

One: the way Kelly and Pablo recognized the real Ash makes absolutely no sense. It would be Evil Ash, not the real one, who would want both of them to die, because the Evil spirit doesn't care if it dies (and we actually saw Deadites with suicidal tendencies in the past). Also Ash wouldn't sacrifice himself. No fucking way.

Two: this complaint is maybe a bit more personal, but I'm interested in what you guys think about it: I just don't like the talking Necronomicon. It felt weird for me in the comics and it feels weird for me here, like some unnecessary attempt to have a villain with a face (pun intended). What do you think?

Other than that and some other few tiny flaws, a wonderful episode. I loved the dismembering scene with the song (I also liked the end credit song and the fact that they actually left it for the end credits) and all of the Amanda action. And I'm also really starting to like Heather. Think I'm actually gonna be sad when she will be killed off next week.

And one other thing: this episode had some wonderful Joseph LoDuca music, but in some cases, I noticed them only because I knew the songs from the soundtrack (for example Amanda Returns) and it was really difficult to hear them in the episode. Maybe I just have a poor audio quality and it will be better with the Blu-Ray 5.1 sound. Or maybe they could just turn LoDuca's music a tiny bit up in the series.

1. I actually thought the way they did in evil ash was very smart, as he wasn't expecting the real ash to  just say "Just shoot us both then" you could tell evil ash was not expecting this comment to come from him so in it's on way i think it worked in getting pablo and kelly to realize which ash is which but i can't help but feel like ash will try and do something like this in the future or he might do it in the finale.

2. I thought the way they handled the talking nerconomicon was done very well actually, it was basically toying with ash's emotions with legit argument's and preying on his fear's of becoming a no body once again. And he almost get's him to at the end there and we see ash actually in a battle with himself to give the book up to ruby, i think he took what some of that book was saying to heart and just wasn't showing it.

Man i am very nervous of what were going to get in this finale, it just looks insane.

That's an interesting twist on it and it actually might work that way. But still, it didn't sit well with me. It's no big deal, though. :)

Yup. Best episode in the show so far (but that's not saying much). All in all, it was fun... And that's all I'm asking from this show at this point. I've already given up on it being actually good, but it can be fun. A few inventive ideas to be found and some unexpected stuff happened. That said, the character writing is still awful and the dialogue still sucks. Sorry, but nostalgia, ridiculous violence and a cool set are not enough to make me lose my mind over this thing. It's still very flawed, full of script and execution issues and even when they get something right, it still feels a little "off" to me. Like it's just trying to copy the Evil Dead feeling and energy instead of actually having it. I really hate what they turned Ash into. He's just a sleazy, racist, oblivious, stupid old man without a compelling character arc or clear motivations. As a matter of fact, his stupidity has turned into the show's equivalent of "a wizard did it". Every time something out of character, convenient or contrived happens, their justification for it seems to be "Ash is stupid, lol". I also don't care one bit about Pablo or Kelly and I hated Amanda. Ruby is still somewhat interesting, even though they haven't done much with her until now. Sorry to be the party pooper again, but I honestly feel there's nothing this season can do anymore to make me love it. I really wanted to like it, but I just can't get past how disappointed I am with how it turned out and the direction they decided to go with it. But I'm glad so many of you are invested in it and enjoying it thoroughly.

- Turns out I was wrong about the characters never leaving the front porch. Still seems like a really stupid thing to do, but I don't know what else they could've done with the hikers. "They're safer out there than in here". No. They're not, Ash. You out of all people, should know that.

- It kinda surprised me that Evil Ash went out like a chump and was taken out even before the title card came up. Also, the way they figured out who was the real Ash was kinda lame. That was a little disappointing, but no biggie. It's just that Bruce was doing such a great job with it and Evil Ash was such a cool presence that I wish they had done more with him.

- Turns out Amanda really is a better character dead than living. She was a cool deadite and I loved her little puppet show. However, I didn't think her make-up looked very good.

- The lighting on the exterior scenes felt wrong. Too much light. Too damn bright. Some shots were so bright that it looked like day.

- I really hope Ruby is possessed by a dark one instead of actually being one. Maybe she was taken by the dark one that was stalking her at the Brujo's place after she was dragged into the funeral pyre. The Ruby that came out of it wasn't really Ruby, but the dark one. I'd like that.

- Still not a single word of explanation on why/how Ash has the book and Ruby has the dagger. I'm just throwing that out there. I truly don't care anymore.

- The book's face attaching itself to Pablo's face was a cool moment and pretty inventive. I'm curious to see what it will lead to. Hopefully they'll actually do something interesting with it. The fact that next episode has double the running time is a good thing. Maybe that'll give them the opportunity to do some more elaborate stuff instead of being forced to solve everything they set up in a manner of minutes.

- Preview for next episode looks good, but some stuff in it kinda reminds me way too much of the ED remake. I hope it's just an impression.

- What was the AoD reference that everyone's talking about? I seem to have missed it. =/

Yeah, that flying Ruby shot was terrible, but it might make more sense next episode if it turns out she's possessed by a dark one. Still, it looked ridiculous... And not in a good way. Just a poorly conceived, poorly executed shot that ruined the moment.

I agree with you on both points. I also didn't like the way they figured out who was the real Ash and I wasn't very fond of the talking Necronomicon.

When ash is talking about cutting up his evil twin he subtly hint's that he has had to do it before, and there's also another AOD reference in the finale promo. It's when they cut to the book it show's the familiar passage showing ash back in medieval time's

I do have to agree that some of the writing for ash in this episode was going over the line in some area's, especially considering with what happen with amanda last episode and the emotional impact it did have on him, but the way he was acting in this episode makes me wonder if he hasn't gone a bit nut's in his old age or the guy writing this episode (Rob Wright) only watched a few minute's of last week's episode and just decided to write down pervy jokes for him to say about amanda, WHO KNOWS *shrug*

Finale prediction's/observation's

Judging from the finale preview, pablo kelly and ash are really gonna be put through some major shit in this finale, anyways prediction time.

- Pablo and kelly look like there going to be having a huge fight scene in this episode which could lead to one of them dieing (hopefully not  :( ) or kelly get's through to pablo and manages to get him to fight back against the demon that has him possessed.

-Ruby looks possessed by a dark one  as you can see her form black eye's in the preview, this could lead to either her dieing or becoming unpossessed some how.

-That creepy child that was mentioned here awhile is finally appearing and boy does he look frightening, ash and kelly seem to be the one's in battle with it.

-Kelly looks like she's going to be taking a lot of abuse in this episode, and ash seem's to be in that boat as well since you can see one of his arm sleeves is missing from his shirt

-Possible hint's of time traveling

-Ruby and Ash look like there going to be having a huge brawl in this episode.

-Heather is being sucked into what looks like a red misty portal to somewhere else.

-Ash and deadite amanda will be having a battle as well at the start of this episode, i'm gonna safely assume that ash win's this fight due to him being in the later scene's

i will be throughly analyzing the stuff starz will be posting on there website after tonight's episode has aired, but i'm wondering if they aren't going to play lock and key with this episode like they did ep 8, we'll see though.

Hm, that shot actually goes against a theory I had a few days ago that this page would not actually be a part of the book (however it still may have been written there by the Wiseman). I'm curious what this means for the show. Will Ash really travel in time in the season finale?
