The apparent (and genuine) truth is that some local 'yahoos' burned the cabin down not long after filming was completed. Sam Raimi span a good yarn a few years later (and I won't be able to tell it as good as he did) that when they (the film crew) arrived, and noticed one brick was missing from the top of the chimney, his story was that the guy who built the cabin was struck by lightening which was why there was one brick missing from the top. Raimi's later story was that a young girl lived in the cabin with her elderly grandparents. One stormy night, she awoke and went into her grandparent's bedroom and found they were both dead. She ran crying out into the woods and was later picked up and put into care. Years later, as an old woman, she'd been reported to 'escape' from her local retirement home on stormy nights and wander the woods around the cabin hoping to find her lost loved ones .... all bullshit of course but I'd love to watch a Raimi short film of it ! :wink
